We’ve previously written about our smallest ever TORBED reactor. Here it is…….the latest in our family of gas scrubbing devices. Below is an example of full scale implementation for gas scrubbing………one of the largest TORBED processors ever made.
A team based at the University of Newcastle has been testing CO2 adsorption and desorption rates using a 3-D printed mini TORBED reactor. The conclusion that they have derived is that the TORBED reactor’s capability in either of these contexts would result in it being significantly smaller than competing technologies. The TORBED reactor‘s accuracy also aids the process. Below are extracts from two papers published by the team.
“The maximum desorption rate measured in this study was found to be 1 order of magnitude faster than those observed in conventional fluidised beds and 2–3 orders of magnitude faster than packed beds. The potential impact of such high absorption and desorption rates could result in an absorber and regenerator being at least 10 times smaller thanother solid-based sorbent capture technologies leading to substantially reduced capital cost of the CO2 capture system and lowering of the overall cost.”

This follows on the same team’s interim conclusion, that
“Adsorption capacities were also affected by the operating temperature. At higher temperatures, lower capacities were observed because of the highly exothermic nature of the carbon capture reaction; i.e. adsorption is thermodynamically more favourable at lower temperatures. This is where the TORBED reactor provides a potential advantage over other technologies. Analysis of the temperature profiles recorded during the adsorption process indicates that the TORBED reactor enables excellent control over the temperature…….”

We first received external validation of the TORBED reactor’s effectiveness as a gas scrubbing device nearly thirty years ago from our then client Comalco Aluminium. They bought nineteen of the largest we have ever made each at more than 5m diameter!
It is good to have received external validation again pointing towards the TORBED reactor’s control and ability to reduce the scale of industrial plant.
